Gouveia e Melo condemns acts of “extreme violence”: “Nothing to justify”

Henrique Gouveia e Melo, a candidate for the 2026 presidential elections, has condemned the violence that occurred on Tuesday in Lisbon, describing it as “extreme and reprehensible.” He emphasized the need for authorities to ensure justice to prevent recurrence.

The incidents on Tuesday, which was Portugal Day, involved two acts of violence: an attack by a far-right group on a theater actor and an assault on a vehicle carrying FC Porto fans.

“It is extreme and condemnable violence, in two words. It is utterly reprehensible. There is no justification for such acts of violence, whether related to ideologies, race, or even ‘club affiliations'”, stated Gouveia e Melo to journalists in Santarém.

“I find it perfectly condemnable, and the authorities should ensure justice, genuinely, to prevent it from happening again”, he added.

It should be noted that on Portugal Day, actor Adérito Lopes of the A Barraca theater company was assaulted by a far-right group in Lisbon while entering a free-entry performance, “Love is a Fire That Burns Unseen,” in tribute to Camões.

On the same day, four FC Porto fans were injured, two of them seriously, when their vehicle was attacked with an incendiary device in Lisbon.
