The expansion plan for Lisbon’s airport, submitted by ANA Airports to the government, aims to increase operations to a maximum of 45 movements per hour, with the proposal set for review by relevant aviation authorities, it has been announced today.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing stated that ANA Airports met the deadline by submitting the plan last Friday, including all investments needed to raise the declared capacity of Humberto Delgado Airport to the specified limit.
The report awaits government review, with a request for evaluations from aviation sector authorities due to its complex and technical nature.
Once validated by the competent authorities and approved by the government, ANA will prepare an Environmental Impact Study to be submitted to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
The expansion of Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport is part of the government’s decision to bolster capacity at Portela until the new Luís de Camões Airport at the Alcochete Firing Range is operational, anticipated in about ten years.
“In the interim, it is essential to minimize the current limitations at Humberto Delgado and ensure optimal comfort and safety for all users and professionals of this facility,” the statement from the ministry headed by Miguel Pinto Luz emphasized.
Since 1942, Humberto Delgado Airport has served Lisbon, spanning over 500 hectares, with plans to dismantle it after the completion of the new infrastructure on the southern bank of the Tagus River.
