The Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation has announced an investigation into potential irregularities at the INED College in Porto, located on Avenida da Boavista, which is closing its doors today. The ministry aims to ascertain any infractions and possible sanctions related to the closure.

“In light of the circumstances and the timing of the closure announcement, the Directorate-General for Schools (DGEstE) will investigate whether there are any signs of irregularities to potentially establish infractions and sanctions,” the ministry stated in a response received today.

The INED College informed parents it will close “permanently” due to an inadequate number of enrollments for the 2025/2026 academic year. Despite efforts by its educational and technical teams, the enrollment numbers were insufficient to sustain the school’s operations, according to a letter sent to parents on June 18, which the ministry accessed today.

The private institution, operating since 1998 and serving over 100 students this academic year, expressed “deep sadness” over its closure.

The ministry confirmed that INED College notified DGEstE about its closure effective June 30, citing “financial instability” as the reason. Parents were informed that the insufficient number of enrollments was the primary cause for closing.

Regarding national exams, the ministry is ensuring student rights are protected during this transition period. DGEstE is managing the closure process to find suitable solutions for finishing the academic year and overseeing the administration of second-phase national exams according to regulatory standards. If necessary, students will take these exams at a public school.

INED College also assured parents that it will support student transfers to new schools with “utmost care, professionalism, and respect for each student and family.” It pledged full support in providing necessary documentation and assistance to facilitate a smooth educational transition.

The institution has not responded to email requests for comment and phone calls to the school have gone unanswered with a message indicating, “The call cannot be completed, please try again later.”
