In a directive, the Secretary of State for Internal Administration, Telmo Correia, has authorized the installation and operation of a video surveillance system, consisting of four cameras, “operated in a manner that ensures the effective protection of privacy and security.”
The video surveillance system is set to operate “uninterruptedly 24 hours a day” for three years, with the possibility of extension upon government authorization.
Viewing of private locations is prohibited.
When questioned, the municipality in the Lisbon district clarified that “following the granted authorization, the process for acquiring the necessary technological solution is already being operationalized for its commencement” but did not provide specific dates.
In 2019, the Municipal Council invested over nine thousand euros in acquiring the physical support infrastructure and cabling.
“Given the increasing flow of pedestrians, particularly tourists, in the area adjacent to the National Palace of Mafra, and considering it is a heritage of recognized historical and cultural value, it is considered that the installation of a video surveillance system contributes to greater security of people and property,” the council explained.
