Government extends deadline for taxi sector to comply with vehicle age limit

The Portuguese government has extended the transitional provisions regulating taxi identification and characteristics until December 31, 2027. This decision, signed by Secretary of State for Mobility Cristina Pinto Dias and published in the Diário da República, prolongs measures initially set to expire at the end of 2025.

Originally, taxis were required to be less than 10 years old from their first registration by December 31, 2025. However, global instability, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and changes in U.S. economic tariffs, have disrupted global supply chains, posing challenges for necessary investment in fleet renewal.

In response, to maintain public taxi service without disruptions, the government has exceptionally extended the deadline for compliance with vehicle age limits by two years. The decision underscores the taxi service’s role as a universal public service, especially crucial in low-demand areas to promote mobility and combat isolation.
