An official from the Ministry of Economy and Territorial Cohesion reported that 6,126 applications have so far been submitted by farmers from 56 municipalities in the districts of Bragança, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Porto, Viseu, Guarda, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Setúbal, and Beja.
The statement noted that the amount of support paid or in the process of being paid, following joint inspections by municipal technicians and the Regional Coordination and Development Commissions (CCDR), exceeds 3.7 million euros.
“The number of applications for extraordinary support for farmers affected by the fires is being continuously updated as submissions are made,” the source stated, adding that the first payments began in September.
Regarding the amounts, the government explained that processing is ongoing “as inspections in the field continue.”
In August, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced the initiation of support for farmers, including undocumented expenses, up to an amount of 10,000 euros.
Luís Montenegro explained that it would be “an agile process” where municipal councils and CCDR (Regional Coordination and Development Commissions) would identify damages and allocate funds.
