
The Finance Minister, when asked about the silence surrounding this decision during a press conference following the Council of Ministers where the announcement of the new governor was expected, stated only that “the Government will make a decision next week.”
Mário Centeno has expressed his willingness to serve another term at the helm of the central bank. However, it seems unlikely that the former Finance Minister will be reappointed, especially after experiencing several moments of tension with the Government.
The nominee for the next governor is proposed by the Government but must be vetted by the Assembly of the Republic in a hearing. Parliamentary committees are only active until the upcoming Friday, July 25, before the parliamentary recess begins.
