Government meets with parliamentary groups on Thursday about local elections

On June 26, meetings between the government and various parliamentary parties will take place in the parliament to discuss the date for the 2025 local elections, stated a note from the office of the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.

In addition to Carlos Abreu Amorim, the government will be represented by the Secretary of State for Local Administration and Territorial Planning, Silvério Regalado.

The meetings begin at 09:30 with the Communist Party (PCP), followed by Chega, the Socialist Party (PS), Liberal Initiative (IL), Livre, the single deputies of PAN and JPP, and the parliamentary groups of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and CDS-PP, the last of which is scheduled for 12:15.

According to Abreu Amorim’s office, a meeting with the Left Bloc (BE) has not yet been scheduled due to scheduling conflicts.

The date for local elections is set by government decree at least 80 days in advance.

According to the electoral law, these elections take place between September 22 and October 14 on a Sunday, so there are practically only three possible dates: September 28, October 5 (a public holiday commemorating the establishment of the Republic), and October 12.

The election campaign period begins on the 12th day prior and ends at midnight on the eve of the election.

The law stipulates that candidate lists “must be submitted to the judge of the competent civil jurisdiction court in the respective municipality’s seat by the 55th day before the election date.”

The last local elections were held on September 26, 2021.
