Government prohibits the use of fire and agricultural machinery (due to fire risk)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Sea announced today that certain prohibitions apply specifically to brush cutters, bush trimmers, chippers, and other equipment likely to cause ignitions, according to current legislation.

While most municipalities in the Alentejo are not subject to legal prohibitions, the ministry warns of potential ignitions in agricultural areas and recommends avoiding the use of agricultural and forestry machinery, including mowers and reapers, especially during daytime.

Following an alert issued today by the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), the ministry emphasizes the need for preventive behaviors by all farmers, producers, and operators to reduce the risk of fire, contributing to the protection of people, property, and territory.

Thirty-six municipalities, across seven districts in the central region and Algarve, face a maximum fire risk today, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The municipalities under this alert belong to the districts of Guarda, Viseu, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, and Faro.

IPMA has also placed several municipalities in almost all districts of the mainland at “very high” and “high” risk of fire.

About 30 municipalities located on the country’s coast have a moderate or reduced fire risk.

IPMA pondera colocar alguns distritos a 'vermelho' devido ao calor

IPMA will reassess the alert levels by the end of the day, which could rise to the highest in some districts due to heat forecasts, even during the night, especially on Monday.

Lusa | 14:50 – 28/06/2025

Today’s forecast for the mainland includes hot weather with clear or slightly cloudy skies, showing more cloudiness along the coastal areas of the North and Centre regions, especially until mid-morning, and inland during the afternoon, alongside a rise in temperature, particularly the maximum.

There is also a possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the interior of the Centre and South regions during the afternoon and mist or fog in some parts of the western coastal strip, especially north of Cabo Raso.

Maximum temperatures will range from 43 degrees Celsius in Beja to 25 in Aveiro.
