Government promises to invest in the GNR traffic unit

Maria Lúcia Amaral attended the military ceremony for the National Traffic Unit Day this morning, held at Parque das Nações in Lisbon, and assured that “the strengthening of its operational capacity is part of a broader strategic vision of the Government.”

In relation to the delivery of 44 cars to this unit, whose keys were blessed by the GNR chaplain also this morning, valued at 1.3 million euros, the minister overseeing Internal Administration reaffirmed the commitment to reorganize the GNR national traffic unit – a measure included in the Government’s program – though she did not elaborate on how this will be achieved.

During her speech at the ceremony, Maria Lúcia Amaral stated that the Government aims to enhance visibility and community policing, implement the national strategic plan to combat road accidents, simplify the payment of road infractions, and improve information systems between security forces and the national road safety authority.

“Road safety and reducing accident rates are an absolute priority for the Government,” said the minister, adding that “road accidents continue to affect too many families in Portugal.”
