During a press conference held after today’s Council of Ministers meeting, the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, highlighted that 29% of slots for medical graduates remained unfilled last academic year, with this year’s figure at 24%, despite the increasing need for more doctors.
“These are necessary medical positions that go unfilled due to rigid quotas. We believe there should be more flexibility for universities to manage them, allowing more medical students to be admitted, which aligns with the opening of new courses that we welcome and support,” the minister emphasized, describing the decree as an important measure for the sector’s future.
The measure aims to grant greater autonomy to universities, in line with the opening of new courses and the need to train more doctors.
