Government wants to transform new control tower of Lisbon airport into a museum

In a press conference following today’s Council of Ministers, the Minister of Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, announced plans for the construction of a new control tower at Humberto Delgado Airport. However, he noted that the government questioned its long-term utility, as it would be dismantled within ten years.

With this consideration, NAV has been “invited to develop a new project allowing the tower to be transformed into a Portuguese airport museum in the future when the airport is decommissioned, thus becoming the first iconic building in the urban park that will emerge on the airport grounds.”

During a pre-briefing meeting with journalists, the minister indicated that the investment, to be undertaken by NAV, the air traffic control company, would range between 10 and 15 million euros.

According to the government’s presentation, this tower is “crucial for enhancing air safety and freeing up the current tower’s space,” yet it envisions becoming an Airport Museum integrated into the Tejo Cities Park following the airport’s closure.
