José Luís Carneiro addressed journalists today regarding Portugal’s unexpected announcement at the NATO Summit that it plans to increase defense investment to 2% of GDP this year, reaching 5% by 2035.
The Socialist Party’s secretary-general emphasized that this percentage equates to an investment of “1.3 billion euros,” a sum that could otherwise be utilized to “develop our country, modernize the economy, and aid in territorial cohesion,” he remarked, noting that the country “possesses other capabilities and competencies that can be integrated into this national and European defense effort.”
Hence, he argued that this “effort should be clarified by the Government,” which was the focus of a letter the Socialist Party sent today to the government led by Luís Montenegro.
“The prime minister must explain to the country how he will reach this amount. We will wait for the explanation,” he stated.
