GPIAAF completed investigations on site and will send information by Friday.

The GPIAAF, along with the Judiciary Police (PJ) and the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), has completed collecting evidence at the scene. “Tomorrow afternoon [Friday], an Informative Note will be released to disclose the initial findings and the direction the investigation will follow,” a spokesperson for this public organization stated today.

On Wednesday, the GPIAAF had announced the opening of an investigation into the accident, which occurred at 18:04 that day, resulting in at least 16 fatalities and over twenty injuries, five of whom are in critical condition. It was noted that due to existing human resource limitations in the railway sector, evidence collection at the site would only commence this morning.

Railway sector sources revealed that since August 2023, the GPIAAF has only had one investigator for this sector and has been awaiting authorization from the Ministry of Finance to hire a second investigator since March of this year.

The Prime Minister confirmed today that there are 16 confirmed deaths and five people in critical condition from Wednesday’s accident involving the Glória elevator.

Luís Montenegro made a statement to the press, without taking questions, after the Council of Ministers meeting, alongside the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, who joined the meeting’s final part at the Prime Minister’s invitation.

The Government has declared today a national day of mourning, while the Lisbon City Hall has instituted three days of municipal mourning.

The Glória elevator connects the Restauradores Square to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in the Bairro Alto district, spanning approximately 265 meters and is a popular attraction for tourists.
