Gray seal spotted at the Marina de Cascais. See the images

A grey seal made an unexpected appearance at the Marina de Cascais on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 9. Miguel Lacerda from Cascaisea shared his account of the sighting and posted a video on Facebook.

“Today at the Marina de Cascais – 2025/12/09, at 4 PM,” he wrote in the post, noting that “the substantial depressions occurring in the northeastern North Atlantic, like this recent ‘Davide,’ often result in such events.”

“Rough seas force these animals to move away from the coast, and as they search for food, they are carried by currents to distant locations,” he added.

In this post, Miguel Lacerda confirmed that the animal was “an adult grey seal, Halichoerus grypus.”

“It apparently shows no injuries, at least not on its back and sides (I did not see the belly), and is behaving normally given the sea conditions,” he continued, emphasizing that the seal was “somewhat startled by human presence and was seeking a flatter and safer area on the breakwater to rest (the sea outside is very rough).”

Miguel Lacerda also mentioned that he had spoken with the Captain of the Port of Cascais, stating that Cascaisea and Clean The Sea “are fully prepared to intervene or assist as needed (even to rescue the seal to return it to its original habitat).”
