“Great importance.” Unanimous approval in greeting the 50th anniversary of Mozambique.

The Portuguese parliament, under the authorship of José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, President of the Assembly of the Republic, extends its greetings to “the Republic of Mozambique on the anniversary of its independence.”

The statement also expresses “its commitment to continue deepening its proximity with Mozambique, exploring new paths of diplomacy — including parliamentary diplomacy —, promoting the Portuguese language, cultural cooperation, and pursuing development, democracy, and peace.”

In the introductory section of the vote, it is highlighted that the 50th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence “is an occasion of great significance, not only for the Mozambican people but also for Portugal, within the context of building democracy and affirming the space of the Portuguese language in the world.”

“Strong are the ties that bind our nations. Ties entrenched in history, through centuries of cultural exchange and decisive economic, political, social, and emotional proximity, shaping both Portugal and Mozambique,” states the vote by the President of the Assembly of the Republic.

Following this, in the proposal by José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, it is noted that this past, “certainly not without contradictions, difficulties, and injustices, has given rise to a bilateral relationship of trust and fraternity, based on shared values and common interests.”

On Wednesday in Maputo, upon arriving at Machava Stadium for the celebrations of Mozambique’s 50 years of independence, the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed being “moved” by the ceremony.

“It’s a great moment for Mozambique and for Portugal. And I am very happy because it’s a message of the future. A morning tribute to the past and now it’s about the future,” remarked the Portuguese head of state.

On the same day, through a message on social media, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro saluted the President of Mozambique on the country’s 50th year of independence, highlighting the “fraternal and unwavering bonds of friendship and trust” between the two nations.

“Today we commemorate the 50 years of Mozambique’s independence — a date of profound symbolism. Our countries are united by fraternal and unwavering bonds of friendship and trust. Through President Chapo, I extend a warm greeting to the Mozambican people, renewing the government’s permanent commitment to strengthening cooperation between Portugal and Mozambique,” he wrote.
