The “burdensome” proposals within the Government’s labor package, which aim to “take away rights, wages, subsidies, credits, and compensations” from workers, are cited as the primary reason by the union federation to justify the strike.
The Fesete union also aims to “fight for a 150-euro salary increase starting in January” and for a hike in meal allowances to a minimum of six euros daily, both beginning next year.
Additional objectives include reducing the weekly working hours to 35 and revoking the rule that provides for the expiration of collective labor contracts.
The CGTP and UGT have called for a general strike on December 11, in response to the Government’s draft labor law reform.
This will be the first strike to unite the two union federations since June 2013, when Portugal was under the ‘troika’s’ intervention.
