Group of firefighters holds a vigil until Monday in front of the AR

A protest organized by a group of 18 firefighters on social media convened in front of the Assembly of the Republic today. According to organizer Humberto Batista, the gathering does not have the support of the National Firefighters League of Portugal.

Approximately twenty firefighters and supporters, some in uniform and others wearing red shirts emblazoned with “Firefighters, Respect and Dignity,” gathered at 12:00 pm.

“[The protest] originated on social networks because we realized that once again, the Government has forgotten the firefighters who have been overlooked amidst a year marred by fires, and we are tired of empty promises,” criticized Batista.

Demands include the creation of incentives for volunteer firefighter careers, such as tax reductions, to attract more youth, and recognition of the professionalism of volunteer firefighters working in institutions.

A poster at the protest outlined additional proposals: retirement at 60 without penalties, career and salary reviews, support for volunteers, “more resources, training and modernization,” and “stable funding for the sector.”

Batista highlighted that when a firefighter applies for a housing loan with life insurance, the premium is higher due to the nature of their risky profession.

“So, am I a professional or not? I cannot understand this aspect,” he remarked.

The firefighter, who did not wish to disclose his affiliation, mentioned that the group plans to hold a vigil overnight and will remain in front of parliament until Monday, the 15th.

In front of the Assembly steps is a coffin with a firefighter’s helmet placed on top and a sign reading “Professionals in action, firefighters of Portugal, life for life.”

The protest organizers anticipate that around one hundred people will gather in front of parliament by the end of the day.
