Growth has not had the “desired impact” on the lives of the poorest.

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, highlighted the need for collective mobilization in the fight against poverty, calling it a “national cause” in a message published on the official website of the Presidency. This statement was made on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Aligning with the United Nations agenda, the President emphasized that poverty remains a pressing issue in Portugal. He noted, “Despite a positive economic trajectory, it has not significantly improved the lives of nearly two million fellow citizens who remain poor or on the verge of poverty.”

Rebelo de Sousa described poverty as a condition that encompasses more than a lack of financial resources, stating that it “promotes inequalities, limits access to housing, employment, education, health, and culture, and hinders civic participation in decision-making.”

The President asserted that “poverty’s impact spans generations” and reiterated that turning the fight against poverty into a national objective will require mobilizing everyone.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was established by a United Nations resolution in 1992. Rebelo de Sousa remarked that “eradicating poverty in all its forms and locations is the first of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda and one of the greatest global challenges, with 780 million people living below the poverty line worldwide.”

A year ago, the President marked this date with a written message urging greater ambition and empathy in combating poverty, advocating for a mobilization against this issue with political and humanitarian strategies.

In October 2024, Rebelo de Sousa served as the guest editor for CAIS magazine, selecting the fight against poverty as the main theme, specifically focusing on child poverty. He called for it to be recognized as a “national cause” and addressed “urgently and without illusions.”
