Tourist activity maintained its growth trajectory in June, but showed signs of slowing down year-on-year, with 7.8 million overnight stays and three million guests, the National Statistics Institute (INE) said today.

“The tourist accommodation sector recorded 3.0 million guests and 7.8 million overnight stays in June 2024, corresponding to variations of +6.7% and +4.8%, respectively,” it said, compared to increases of 9.5% and 7.6% in May 2024, in the same order.

Overnight stays from residents rose by 3.2%, “corresponding to 2.2 million, while those from non-residents grew by 5.5%, totaling 5.6 million”.

According to INE, in foreign markets, “the UK remained the main source market (20.8% share), having grown by 5.5% in June, followed by the United States (10.6% share), which grew by 13.7%, and Germany (10.6% share), which showed a slight decrease (-0.4%)”.

According to the data released by the entity, “all regions recorded an increase in overnight stays, with the greatest expression in the Setúbal Peninsula (+9.1%) and the Azores (+7.2%), with more modest increases in Madeira (+3.3%) and the Algarve (+3.7%)”.

Considering the second quarter of 2024, “overnight stays increased by 2.8% (+7.4% in the first quarter), due to non-residents (+4.2%; +8.7% in the first quarter), with overnight stays from residents decreasing by 0.8% (+4.7% in the 1st quarter)”, said INE, with “overnight stays growing by 4.5% in the first half of the year”, increasing by 1.4% among residents and rising by 5.8% among non-residents”.

The INE pointed out that the quarterly results “were influenced by the moving structure of the calendar, i.e. the effect of the vacation period associated with Easter, which this year was spread between the first and second quarters, while in the previous year it was concentrated only in the second quarter.”
