
The activities, including Rodrigo Leão’s concert at TMG [Teatro Municipal da Guarda], will be rescheduled at a later date, announced the municipality in a note sent to the news agency Lusa.
This includes the opening of the Environment Division headquarters of the municipality, located on Rua Dom Sancho I in the historic center, originally planned for today, along with the inaugurations of the requalification works on Avenida Cidade de Bejar and the surrounding area; streets in Bairro do Torrão and municipal roads in Sobral da Serra, the Corujeira/Trinta-Barragem do Caldeirão section, and Famalicão da Serra, scheduled for Friday.
The opening of the nursery at the Gonçalo School Center and the Pedestrian Route — Rota da Quinta da Taberna, in the parish of Videmonte, are also postponed.
Thus, the 51st anniversary of the Day of Freedom will be marked with the hoisting of the flag at 10:30, followed by the official session in the Sala António de Almeida Santos.
During the occasion, silver-grade medals of honor from the municipality will be awarded to all Parish Councils of Guarda.
The Saturday program remains unchanged, featuring book presentations related to the 50 years of April, starting at 16:00, at the Espaço Ecclesia.
The books include ‘A Guarda e os 25 de Abril: Memória(s) e Desafios’ — a collection; ‘Uma Porta para a Liberdade, o Ser e o Agir: Breve Biografia de Luís Erse Baeta de Campos’; ‘Cândido da Conceição Pimenta: O Resistente’; and ‘Augusto José Monteiro Valente, Major-General do Exército Português (1944-2012), Capitão de Abril: Republicano, Cidadão e Historiador’.
The event will also feature a tribute to João José Gomes (1912-2003), a lawyer, republican, and a significant figure in the anti-fascist struggle in Guarda.
The celebrations continue on Sunday with the “Comemorar Abril” show by the Centro Cultural da Guarda at the Paço da Cultura auditorium, and on April 28 with the District Women’s Football Festival at Zambito Sports Field.
The government has declared three days of national mourning from April 24 to 26 in response to the death of the Pope, coinciding with the funeral ceremonies, which will take place on Saturday at the Vatican.
