Guimarães hosts a new exhibition by Alexandre Estrela

In the context of International Museum Day, which will be celebrated over the weekend, exhibitions will feature artist and curator-led tours on Sunday morning, with free admission. There will also be the performance ‘Mickey Mouth’ by Borja Caro and Violeta Azevedo on Saturday night, along with a community dinner.

“On the ground floor, which supports the permanent collection of the CIAJG, the individual exhibition ‘INTERVALO’ by artist Alexandre Estrela opens. Designed exclusively for CIAJG, within the interval of a tripartite exhibition, this exhibition engages with animation and cartoon in the interplay between painting and video, within the links of a collective memory,” reads the statement released today by the museum.

Curated by former CIAJG artistic director Marta Mestre, the exhibition will transform “the CIAJG rooms into a meticulously orchestrated experience,” where “visitors will be guided by a spectral and technical choreography, experiencing the gallery as a living, unfolding, and evolving space.”

The work by Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela consists of a filming of the painting “Inferno,” a 16th-century canvas by an unknown artist now part of the National Museum of Ancient Art collection, which “will enter into a solitary friction with the foundation of the museum and with the entire artistic program of the Center.”

“Authored by an unknown Portuguese master, in this painting, the demonic is associated with the extra-European universe: Lucifer is dressed in Amerindian feather headdress, sits on an African throne, and holds an ivory trumpet; another demon is also adorned with plumage,” describes the museum.

‘Inferno’ filmed by Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela is curated by Marta Mestre and João Terras.

The inauguration takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
