
The festival has traversed time, gathering diverse formations to present various approaches to jazz,” stated programmer Ivo Martins in remarks. The program aims to create “spaces of openness, respecting the uniqueness of the musicians,” while trying to “establish a coherent vision of the reality” of this musical genre.
The festival kicks off at the Cultural Center of Vila Flor (CCVF) with Immanuel Wilkins, who brings his acclaimed ‘Blues Blood.’ He will perform “with an expanded lineup, including three vocalists, to pay tribute to the African-American musical tradition,” according to the organizers.
Friday marks the return of Portuguese singer Maria João to Guimarães Jazz after 20 years, accompanied by the Orchestra of Guimarães to celebrate her 40-year career.
On Saturday, American pianist Fred Hersch takes the stage, followed by Mark Turner’s quintet on the 13th. The following day features a trio comprising Craig Taborn, Tomeka Reid, and Ches Smith.
Closing the Guimarães Jazz on the 15th is pianist Danilo Pérez with Sweden’s Bohuslän Big Band.
The ‘jam sessions’ will be held by the Alex Hitchcock Quintet, performing on the 9th with the Jazz Orchestra of the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE) and again on the 15th.
The program also features various national names, including the Hugo Santos 5tet, double bassist André Carvalho, and pianist Clara Lacerda, among others.
