Gulbenkian Foundation helps Cape Verde with 80 thousand euros after storm

Thirty thousand euros from the total amount will be allocated to the Cape Verdean Red Cross to enhance emergency responses for the most vulnerable families, combining immediate assistance and community resilience strengthening, ensuring temporary shelter, food distribution, hygiene kits, and other basic needs,” reads the statement released today to Lusa.

In the document, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation also states that “up to 50,000 euros will be provided to the Dr. Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo, a partner of the Foundation in the Onco-CV project, for urgent replenishment of hospital consumables, particularly reagents, and to address any potential increase in demand for medical care resulting from the emergency situation.”

The floods in mid-August left neighborhoods submerged, destroyed roads, bridges, and businesses, disrupted the power supply, and resulted in nine fatalities, with two people still missing.

Subsequently, the Cape Verdean government declared a six-month state of calamity in São Vicente, Porto Novo (Santo Antão), and two municipalities in São Nicolau.

The executive approved a response plan with emergency support for families and economic activities, including subsidized credit lines and non-repayable grants, funded by the National Emergency Fund and the Sovereign Emergency Fund, created in 2019.

“With this intervention, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation aims to contribute to addressing the damage caused by Tropical Storm Erin in Cape Verde and support the recovery of the most affected communities,” the statement further reads.
