“He has proven himself.” Carneiro confirms that he will propose support for Seguro.

The General Secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), José Luís Carneiro, confirmed on Sunday that he will propose to the National Committee the party’s support for António José Seguro’s candidacy in the 2026 presidential elections.

In a speech marking the start of the PS National Committee in Penafiel, Carneiro noted that Seguro “has proven himself in the service of democratic and constitutional values.”

“António José Seguro, in addition to having been the general secretary of the socialist youth, was also the general secretary of our party. He has proven himself in the service of democratic and constitutional values,” he stated.

He added, “Considering the special – social and political – time we are living in, only the response of democratic socialism can meet the fundamental demands of the values we defend.”

Nonetheless, he cautioned, supporting Seguro “must not undermine the freedom of the leaders, the members, the sympathizers” of the PS.

It should be noted that, earlier this week, it was reported that José Luís Carneiro and Carlos César would present a proposal for PS to support the former Socialist general secretary to the National Committee.

PS Support? “I take good note of this news,” said Seguro

Seguro stated that he “took good note” of this proposal of support from the PS but reiterated that his candidacy remains “open” because the President of the Republic should be “above parties.”

“I take good note of this news, but I neither want to nor should I interfere in the internal life of political parties in Portugal. My candidacy was presented four months ago and has been garnering more and more support, from the left, right, center, and from people with no party affiliation, and that’s where I will continue,” he responded.
