He is 80 years old, was a forest ranger, and sees his house burning: “I don’t know what to do”

An 80-year-old former forest ranger saw his house consumed by flames, losing “everything” as the fire reached his home in Fornos de Algodres, Guarda.

The elderly man, named Luís, stated in an interview that “everything burned, nothing was spared,” and all that remained of his home was “a generator.”

Luís had lived in the house “for many years,” and when asked about what he had lost, he replied, “I have nothing left, only what I’m wearing.”

When questioned about his plans, considering his house was located in the middle of a pine forest, he replied, “I have to find a solution.”

He also mentioned that before the flames reached his residence, he was alerted by firefighters and the National Republican Guard, who told him “he had to leave.”

“I don’t even know what I’m going to do. I don’t know what to do,” he concluded, when asked about his next steps.

During Wednesday’s briefing at 7 p.m., the Deputy National Commandant for Emergency and Civil Protection, José Ribeiro, reported seven incidents causing “major concern and complexity,” namely in Sirarelhos (Vila Real), Trancoso (Beiras e Serra da Estrela), Chavães (Tabuaço), Vila Boa (Sátão), Arganil, Vila Chã de Sá (Viseu), and Quirás (Bragança).

“Including active operations and those being resolved, we have about 3,200 personnel involved,” he added.
