A 30-year-old man has been arrested by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Penafiel on suspicion of multiple violent crimes, including aggravated robbery, committed on Thursday, November 20.
In a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the PJ disclosed that the suspect is “strongly implicated in the crimes of aggravated robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon, and vehicle theft.”
The man allegedly traveled in a stolen vehicle to a commercial establishment, posing as a “regular customer.” He then suddenly brandished a firearm at the proprietors, demanding they hand over all the money from the cash register along with items on display, valued at “hundreds of euros,” according to investigators.
Despite being frightened, the victims managed to subdue the suspect and disarm him, taking away the loaded and ready-to-fire weapon.
Together with the GNR, the PJ gathered “relevant evidentiary elements” that support the allegations.
The detained individual, who already has a criminal and police record for various offenses, will now appear in court to learn the appropriate coercive measures.
