In a statement to the press after visiting Escola D. Maria II in Braga, Rui Rocha was asked whether the Ministry of Education is among those his party aims to secure in a potential post-electoral agreement with AD.
“The Liberal Initiative (IL) has a comprehensive political proposal for all areas, with a reformist spirit across the board. Furthermore, IL boasts a vast pool of qualified individuals in every field: from health to education, security to economy. We have both the people and the ideas for all government ministries. I can form a government right here,” he responded.
When pressed to name individuals for this hypothetical government, particularly for the position of Minister of Education, Rocha suggested Matilde Rocha, sixth on IL’s list in Porto, citing her expertise in education.
“We have highly qualified professionals. It’s a hallmark of IL to have skilled personnel for every area. Therefore, the Portuguese can count on us, as we can easily form an IL government,” he emphasized, urging voters to support IL to “transform the country with a comprehensive government across all fields.”
Queried whether he prefers the Finance or Economy portfolio, the IL leader stated his preference for all areas.
“Don’t make me choose. I want all the portfolios. I want a significant vote for IL, a capability to transform the country, that is what’s fundamental,” he asserted.
During these remarks, Rui Rocha was also asked to comment on the statements made by Livre’s spokesperson, Rui Tavares, who expressed a desire to contend for the fourth position with IL.
“Everyone has their own goals. I want to transform the country, I want to bring change, I want to introduce reforms. Others set their objectives as they see fit. Mine are clear,” he replied.
Regarding parties that have begun appealing for strategic voting, Rocha described the notion of a “useful vote” as a weak idea.
“I believe the strong idea, the strong vote, is one of reform, transformation, and confidence, and that is the vote I insist on for IL,” he reiterated.
