Health authorities warn of heatwave risks until the 13th.

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS), the Executive Directorate of the SNS (DE-SNS), and the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) have issued a joint statement alerting the public about the health impacts of sustained high temperatures. They emphasize the importance of staying hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water daily.

The statement also advises against consuming alcoholic beverages and caffeine, urging people to stay in cool or air-conditioned environments with shade and airflow for at least two to three hours a day. It is recommended to keep windows, blinds, and shutters closed during peak heat periods, especially in areas at risk of fire dust.

People are advised to avoid direct sun exposure, particularly between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and to consistently use sunscreen with a factor of 30 or higher, reapplying every two hours, including after swimming in the sea or pools.

The health authorities emphasize wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers most of the body, a hat, and sunglasses with UV protection. They also advise avoiding outdoor activities that require significant physical exertion.

The public is advised to travel during cooler times of the day, with temperatures expected to surpass 40°C in the Alentejo region and the interior areas of the North and Central regions. Minimum temperatures will also remain high, staying above 20°C inland.

The statement highlights the need to pay special attention to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, chronic patients, pregnant women, and outdoor workers, as well as to check on those living alone.

In emergencies, signs like heavy sweating, fever, vomiting/nausea, or a rapid/weak pulse prompt authorities to advise contacting the SNS 24 helpline at 808 24 24 24 or the European emergency number 112.

DGS, DE-SNS, and INSA report they are continuously monitoring the weather situation and its impact on health, consolidating contingency measures of the Seasonal Health Response Plan in coordination with regional and local bodies.

Since Sunday, mainland Portugal has been on alert due to a high risk of fires, a situation expected to last at least until Thursday.
