“Our professionals follow strict service standards, and these protocols are currently being evaluated,” the healthcare facility assured in a statement, referring to a “serious incident that resulted in the death of a patient” without further elaborating.
The healthcare unit revealed that “the police were immediately alerted” following the incident, and procedures have been initiated to “understand if there was any protocol breach” and to “implement corrective and preventive measures as necessary.”
According to PSP sources, the incident involved a firearm followed by a suicide attempt. The suspect had been admitted late Thursday for “psychotic episodes” and was hospitalized with his wife at a mental health facility.
At around 03:00, shots were heard. When healthcare professionals entered the room, the woman was found dead, and the man was on the floor with torso injuries, still holding the weapon.
The Casa de Saúde de Santa Catarina stated that it is “fully cooperating with the authorities.”
Expressing condolences, the healthcare unit said it is “deeply” supportive of the families’ pain and is offering all necessary support during this difficult time.
The Judiciary Police are investigating the case, as confirmed by the PSP.
The perpetrator survived and was transported to the Hospital de Santo António in Porto, the referral hospital for Aldoar, where the health facility is located.
A source from Santo António confirmed to Lusa that the case is “under judicial secrecy,” providing no further information.
PSP sources initially indicated to Lusa that the suspect had been transferred to Hospital Santos Silva in Gaia.
A source from the Gaia hospital denied that the man had been admitted there.
