Health professional shot in Leiria. Hospital condemns “violence”

The board of directors of the Leiria Health Unit (ULS) reported that the victim was “discharged” after receiving treatment at the Santo André Hospital’s Emergency Department.

The healthcare professional was in serious condition after being shot at 11:58 p.m. on Friday. Another person was also injured, but with less severity, according to the Sub-regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection in the Leiria Region.

The Humanitarian Association of Leiria Volunteer Firefighters confirmed the victim was a 53-year-old man admitted to the hospital in a serious condition.

The second individual was also transported to the hospital.

The ULS board of the Leiria Region condemned and regretted the violent act that occurred on Friday night “outside the hospital premises, affecting a healthcare professional from this institution,” the statement read, without providing further details.

“The board will provide all necessary cooperation to the competent authorities investigating the case,” it added, reaffirming its “total commitment to defending its professionals and not tolerating any form of violence against those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.”

The Judicial Police confirmed to Lusa that they are investigating the incident.

The Leiria Volunteer Firefighters, an Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER), and the Public Security Police (PSP) were present at the scene.
