The Bloco de Esquerda (BE) intends to “present a bill to reduce risks and protect workers who work in extreme heat conditions.” This information was shared on the party’s social media account on platform X, this Tuesday, July 1.
“It’s unbearably hot, and everyone says ‘it’s impossible to be outside.’ But there are thousands of people working in this heat,” the Bloco de Esquerda states in a series of messages, noting that “the International Labour Organization states that, globally, 70% of workers are exposed to excessive heat at work.”
The party continues, emphasizing the “urgent need to protect those who work.” They add: “Outdoors, there should be work exemptions when temperatures exceed the defined limit. In enclosed spaces, employers need to be more accountable for cooling conditions.”

Heatwave grips Portugal (and beyond)
Portugal and southern Europe have experienced days of extreme heat, prompting various weather alerts. From Friday to Monday, several districts were on a red alert, the highest level due to high temperatures. These conditions were caused by a mass of air from North Africa, conducive to very hot and dry weather.
The districts affected included Lisbon, Setúbal, Santarém, Évora, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre.

On Sunday, Mora, Évora, recorded a new all-time high for June in mainland Portugal, with the meteorological station registering 46.6° Celsius.
