Heat ‘brings’ danger: “We are under a winter sea, with strong currents”

The commander of the Port Authority of Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, Mónica Martins, issued a warning on Tuesday regarding the premature approach to the swimming season following two incidents reported on different beaches.

In the afternoon, a possible swimmer in distress was noted at Salgueira Beach in Póvoa de Varzim.

However, upon the arrival of emergency services, it was found to be merely a man swimming outside the usual area, causing panic among onlookers.

“Such situations should be avoided as they can unnecessarily mobilize rescue resources,” emphasized the commander.

Despite the good weather, she reminded the public that the official swimming season has not yet started, meaning the beaches lack constant surveillance.

“We are still under the influence of winter seas, with strong rip currents. It is essential for people to enjoy the beach responsibly and avoid swimming in unsupervised areas,” Mónica Martins cautioned.

It should be noted that at another beach in Póvoa de Varzim, two young girls encountered difficulties, with one being hospitalized after a current left her in distress.
