The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange warning for high temperatures affecting the districts of Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, and Beja until 6 p.m. on Thursday. In Vila Real, Viseu, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal, and Faro, this warning will downgrade to yellow at 6 p.m. today.
The mountainous regions of Madeira are also under an orange warning for persistent high temperatures until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
A yellow warning, the least severe on a three-tier scale, applies to Viana do Castelo, Braga, and Porto until 6 p.m. on Thursday, and to Aveiro, Coimbra, and Leiria until 6 p.m. today.
The southern coast of Madeira is under a yellow warning for continuous hot weather until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
The government has renewed the national alert status until Wednesday, August 13, due to the risk of forest fires.
This alert renewal is based on continued high temperatures expected nationwide in the coming days and a reduction in ignition incidents due to implemented bans.
Current measures include prohibiting access, movement, and staying in forested areas as outlined by Municipal Forest Fire Defense Plans, as well as banning fires, burning, and suspending previously issued permits for these activities.
The alert status also bans operations in forested and rural areas using machinery, as well as fireworks and other pyrotechnics, with any existing permits suspended.
The IPMA forecasts continue hot weather today, with mostly clear skies and dust, and possible showers and thunderstorms, especially inland.
A slight rise in minimum temperatures and a moderate rise in maximum temperatures are expected on the northern and central coasts.
Minimum temperatures will range from 16°C in Leiria and Viana do Castelo to 29°C in Portalegre, while maximums will vary from 27°C in Viana do Castelo to 44°C in Beja.
