Heat is high, and there’s also a fire risk. There are 30 municipalities in maximum danger.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a warning of a very high risk of rural fires across several municipalities in the northern and central interior regions and the Algarve.

The risk of rural fires is expected to increase throughout the week and remain high at least until the beginning of the next week, as calculated by the IPMA.

This risk level, assessed by the IPMA, follows a scale of five levels, ranging from low to maximum risk. The calculations consider factors such as air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and precipitation within the past 24 hours.

Starting Thursday, the IPMA forecasts rising temperatures, potentially exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some regions of mainland Portugal, particularly inland.

Minimum temperatures may surpass 20°C in certain areas, especially in the southern region, the Tagus Valley, and Beira Baixa.

For today, the institute predicts partly cloudy or clear skies across the mainland, moderate winds from the north/northwest, strengthening with gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour along the coastal strip and highlands, a slight increase in minimum temperatures, particularly in the north and central regions, and a decrease in maximum temperatures in the central and southern areas.

Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 11 degrees Celsius (in Guarda) and 20 degrees (in Faro), with maximums between 23 degrees (in Leiria, Aveiro, Porto, and Braga) and 34 (in Castelo Branco).
