With weather forecasts from the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), the Direção-Geral da Saúde (DGS) advises regular water intake, avoiding alcoholic beverages.
The DGS advises avoiding sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., recommending the use of loose-fitting clothing that covers most of the body, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, as well as sunscreen with a protection factor of 30, reapplying every two hours.
Particular attention should be paid to those with chronic illnesses, children, the elderly, and people with reduced mobility. Keeping updated with weather conditions is crucial to adopting necessary precautions.
The health authority also suggests having cold and light meals more frequently, working outdoors accompanied, keeping house blinds closed, allowing air circulation in the evening, and staying in cool environments for at least two to three hours a day.
The districts of Setúbal, Évora, and Beja will be under a yellow warning for hot weather from Wednesday to Thursday, with Lisbon facing the same warning only on May 29, according to the IPMA.
For Setúbal, Évora, and Beja, the warning is valid from 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, according to the IPMA.
In Lisbon, the warning is in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday due to the hot weather alert, given the “persistent high temperatures.”
Over the weekend, the IPMA had already warned of a gradual temperature rise starting Tuesday in mainland Portugal, with increased risk of rural fires, potentially reaching maximum classification in some southern municipalities.
Maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C in most areas starting today, except in some locations along the western coastal strip, and exceed 35°C in the South and Tagus Valley.
The hot and dry weather is attributed to a warm air mass from North Africa.
The ultraviolet radiation index will remain at very high levels, as expected around the summer solstice and due to the absence of cloud cover.
