Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Beja, and Portalegre will be under an orange alert due to “the persistence of high maximum temperature values” from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday.
From 9:00 a.m. on Friday to midnight Saturday, these five districts are under a yellow alert.
During the same period from Friday to midnight Sunday, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Santarém, Lisbon, and Castelo Branco will be under a yellow alert due to hot weather.
Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will be on a yellow alert from 9:00 a.m. Saturday to midnight Sunday.
The orange alert, the second most severe on a scale of three, is issued by IPMA when there is a “meteorological risk situation from moderate to high,” and the yellow alert, the least severe, indicates a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather conditions.
The IPMA anticipates a gradual increase in temperatures starting today, reaching up to 10 degrees Celsius higher by the weekend, with maximums expected to exceed 40 degrees in some regions.
According to the Institute, the weather in mainland Portugal and Madeira will be influenced by an anticyclone positioned north of the Iberian Peninsula and a depression trough causing the approach of a hot air mass from North Africa.
On the mainland, temperatures will rise gradually, with the highest values expected from Saturday, ranging between 35°C and 40°C across most of the territory, except for some northern and central coastal areas, with values between 40°C and 44°C expected in the south, the Tagus Valley, and the Douro Valley.
The minimum temperature will be around 20°C in much of the territory, especially in the south, where it may not drop below 25°C in some areas, notably on the Algarve coast and in the Portalegre region.
IPMA also forecasts the presence of suspended dust starting this afternoon in the southern region, spreading to the rest of the territory in the following days.
On Madeira Archipelago, maximum temperatures will also rise gradually over the coming days, with the most significant increase in the highlands of Madeira Island, where values between 26°C and 28°C are expected on Saturday and Sunday.
The minimum temperature on the south coast and Porto Santo Island is not expected to fall below 20°C, marking “tropical nights.”
On the north coast and highlands, the minimum temperature should vary between 14°C and 18°C.
According to IPMA, the duration of this hot weather episode remains uncertain but is expected to extend into early July, especially in the southern region.
