Heat puts ten districts of the continent under yellow warning until Thursday

The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Lisbon, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre will be under a yellow warning from 09:00 today until 18:00 on Thursday.

The southern coast of Madeira Island will also be under a yellow warning between 09:00 today and 18:00 Thursday due to persistent high maximum temperatures.

The yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.

The IPMA forecasts a rise in temperature beginning today, with higher values in the interior of the north and center regions, the Tagus Valley, and the southern region, ranging from 34 to 39 degrees Celsius, well above the usual for this time of year.

The minimum temperature is expected to register the highest values, around 20 degrees, in the eastern Algarve, gradually extending to some locations in the western Algarve and the interior of Alentejo and the central region, notably in highland areas.

“Accompanying this temperature rise, there will be a general weakening of the wind and an increase in cloudiness in some places on the northern and central coast, where, near the coastal strip, the temperature will remain lower,” according to the Institute.

This hot weather episode is expected to persist until Friday, with a sharp temperature drop over the weekend, according to the IPMA, to values normal or slightly below normal for this time of year, with a possible decrease of 08 to 10 degrees in maximum temperatures in some areas.

“The weather in mainland Portugal is influenced by a high-pressure system located to the northeast of the Azores archipelago, extending in a ridge to the Bay of Biscay, which in the coming days will gradually move eastwards, promoting the transport of a hot and dry air mass over the mainland territory,” according to the IPMA.
