Heavy rain and thunderstorms. Bad weather places four districts on ‘orange’ alert.

Faro, Setúbal, and Beja remain under an orange warning today until at least 3:00 PM due to persistent and occasionally heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, as indicated by the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) on its website.

The district of Braga is experiencing similar conditions, with IPMA predicting a potential easing of the weather before early afternoon.

The districts of Viana do Castelo, Porto, Viseu, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre, Santarém, and Lisbon are under a yellow warning, as are the southern coast and mountainous regions of Madeira Island, due to forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The district of Évora is also under a yellow warning, but due to strong winds, with gusts potentially reaching 80 km/h.

The entire western and southern coastlines of the country are under a yellow warning due to maritime agitation.

The orange warning from IPMA is issued whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation,” and the yellow warning is for conditions that pose a risk to certain activities dependent on weather conditions.

The mainland of Portugal recorded 2,806 incidents due to bad weather until 10:00 PM on Friday, primarily in the Setúbal Peninsula and Greater Lisbon, with a decrease in incidents in recent hours.

A representative of the Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil (ANEPC) reported to Lusa in a summary at 10:15 PM, that of the 2,806 incidents, 1,507 were due to floods, 529 due to fallen trees, and 311 involved road cleaning.

The Setúbal Peninsula was the most affected sub-region with 597 of these occurrences, followed by Greater Lisbon (349) and the Algarve (285).

According to the same source, the number of incidents has reduced in recent hours, with 59 recorded in the last three hours.

In a statement, ANEPC emphasized that the impact of adverse weather effects can be minimized through appropriate preventive measures, particularly in historically vulnerable areas, by adopting actions such as clearing rainwater drainage systems.

Civil Protection advises citizens to exercise special caution when traveling in forested areas, to take precautions along coastal and river areas, and to avoid activities related to the sea, such as recreational fishing, water sports, and beach walks, as well as parking vehicles near the coastline.

Other preventive measures include defensive driving, reducing speed, paying close attention to potential water accumulation on roads, avoiding crossing flooded areas to prevent the risk of people or vehicles being swept away into pavement holes or open sewer covers, and moving animals, equipment, vehicles, and other goods from typically flood-prone areas to safe locations.

Depression Cláudia has been affecting mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago since Wednesday with heavy rain, wind, and strong maritime agitation, according to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA).
