
“By engaging in ’empty talk,’ we are tarnishing the most noble election in Portugal. It’s very sad to see institutions being affronted in this manner,” states Henrique de Freitas in a letter addressed to João Lopes Aleixo, president of Chega’s National Board.
In the letter, the former Secretary of State of the PSD-CDS government led by Durão Barroso, who joined Chega in 2024, argues that “Belém First” should be the slogan for André Ventura’s candidacy “to dispel the already established notion of a ‘São Bento afterwards,'” implying a shift in focus.
“No, I did not join Chega to witness the dignity of the presidential role being trampled upon,” writes the former PSD and Chega deputy, requesting to withdraw from the party, where he is member number 53209.
