Here come waves with “significant height.” Here are the precautions to take at the beach.

The coming days in mainland Portugal, from Tuesday until Wednesday morning, will be marked by “maritime agitation” with waves of “significant height.” Here are some safety guidelines if you plan on going to the beach.

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) warned on Monday that “the sea state forecast indicates a worsening of weather and maritime agitation conditions in mainland Portugal from tomorrow, August 26, until midday Wednesday, August 27.”

This maritime agitation will consist of a “swelling from the west-northwest quadrant, with a significant height that could reach four meters and a maximum height of seven meters, with an average period ranging between 15 and 17 seconds.”

Additionally, winds from the north quadrant are expected, with an average intensity of up to 38 km/h and gusts of up to 69 km/h.

Therefore, the AMN advises, “to take extra care when going to the beach.” Here are the recommendations:

  • Visit beaches that are permanently monitored;
  • Respect the flag signals and beach signs;
  • Follow the instructions of lifeguards, authorities, and beach security personnel;
  • Monitor children at all times;
  • Avoid sitting beneath unstable cliffs.

Over the weekend, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) had already indicated “very energetic waves with a high volume of water,” due to the post-tropical cyclone ERIN, which was located on Saturday “west of the Azores archipelago, moving northeast.”

In a statement, the IPMA also explained that waves with significant height up to four meters are expected on the western coast on Tuesday, possibly reaching a maximum height of seven meters.

According to the IPMA, during high tide in the afternoon, combined with a predictably high tide amplitude, several beaches may not have available sand areas.

“Due to the northwest direction of the swell, the southern coast of Algarve will not be as exposed to this situation, with southwest waves up to one meter,” the statement read.

The swell will remain strong on the western coast throughout the week, with significant heights between two to three meters.

On Monday, the IPMA alerted that the districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will be under yellow warning from 6:00 am Tuesday until midnight Wednesday due to the maritime agitation.

Ten districts of mainland Portugal will be under yellow warning on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the forecast of strong maritime agitation, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
