An amber weather warning will be in effect from 10:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Saturday.
The IPMA has also issued an amber warning for the district of Lisbon, effective from 14:00 today until midnight on Thursday, due to forecasts of strong winds with gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour, especially along the coast and in mountainous regions.
An amber warning is issued when there is a risk for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
The Institute forecasts a rise in temperatures from Thursday, which may exceed 40 degrees Celsius in some regions of mainland Portugal, particularly in the interior.
“The anticyclone located southwest of the Azores region is expected to gradually move east/northeast, intensifying and gradually expanding towards the Bay of Biscay from the 24th and potentially towards Central Europe from the 25th or 26th,” stated the IPMA in a release.
The IPMA further explains that this situation, “combined with a depressive region between North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula, results in the transport of hot and dry air masses to mainland Portugal from the Iberian Peninsula, which from the 26th, are expected to similarly affect the archipelago of Madeira.”
A significant rise in air temperature is anticipated from Thursday, with maximum temperatures surpassing 30 degrees across most of the mainland, reaching 40 degrees in some areas, notably in the southern interior and the Tagus Valley.
Minimum temperatures are expected to exceed 20 degrees in some interior regions, particularly in the south, the Tagus Valley, and Beira Baixa.
The forecast also indicates an increase in wind intensity along the western coastal zone and highlands from today, with moderate to strong winds from the north/northwest, occasionally with gusts.
In Madeira, maximum temperatures “may hover around or even exceed 30 degrees, especially on the southern slope and in mountainous regions.”
