
Several media outlets reported on Saturday that the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, had not yet clarified all doubts regarding his bank accounts and that the process remained open. However, the , reiterating that he had not concealed any bank account.
Montenegro specifically accused Expresso and Correio da Manhã of having “a pattern of presenting news which subsequently misleads other media outlets, political agents, and the public, resulting in the reproduction of headlines that are completely false.”
Responding to journalists’ inquiries on Saturday, Luís Montenegro stated he had “three current accounts” and that “none of them had a balance exceeding 50 times the national minimum wage.”
He also emphasized that he had not hidden any account and reiterated being the only Portuguese politician to have publicly disclosed the value of his income declarations over the past 15 years. He questioned why only the prime minister and the PSD are subjected to this “type of scrutiny and association,” assuring that Portuguese citizens “can trust the prime minister, the PSD, and the AD.”
Public Prosecutor’s Office Archived Case
Subsequently, after Montenegro’s statements, the PSD issued a statement announcing that the Public Prosecutor’s Office considered the prime minister had cleared all doubts concerning his income declaration and archived the case. The dismissal document was attached for reference.
Citing the decision, the social democrats’ communiqué stated that “the Public Prosecutor considered all additional clarifications requested last Thursday satisfied,” prompting them to share the document with the media, “to eliminate any doubts about the facts’ veracity.”
“There was no fault on the part of the PSD President, nor is there any pending review,” concluded the social democrats’ communiqué.
