A 30-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of September 3 after hiding inside a restaurant in the Lisbon parish of Santa Maria Maior, intending to commit a burglary.
The arrest took place at 2 a.m. after police were alerted that the intrusion alarm of a restaurant had been triggered, as stated by the Public Security Police (PSP) in a statement sent to newsrooms this Thursday.
The security force determined that the man had concealed himself in the commercial establishment before its closing at midnight, planning a theft “valued at 17,300 euros.”
“Within his reach were two envelopes containing 2,300 euros and several bottles of alcoholic beverages, valued at 13,000 euros,” detailed the PSP.
The man is to appear before the Lisbon District Court for the application of preventive measures.
This operation was conducted by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, through the 1st Police Division.
Violent and serious crime increased by 2.6% last year compared to 2023, with 14,385 crimes recorded, while overall crime decreased by 4.6% with 354,878 reports, according to the Annual Report on Internal Security (RASI).

The report detailed that the crimes with the most significant increases included street robbery (up 8.7%), vehicle theft (up 106.3%), robbery in commercial or industrial buildings (up 21.7%), rape (up 9.9%), and robbery of banks or other credit institutions (up 128.6%).
The RASI is compiled by the Internal Security System and approved by the Higher Council for Internal Security, an interministerial body chaired by the Prime Minister that advises on internal security matters.
In addition to police and intelligence service directors, the council includes the ministers of Internal Administration, Presidency, Justice, National Defense, Finance and Public Works, Transport and Communications, as well as the Attorney General.
