Highs reach 43ºC, but it will also rain: What to expect this Saturday

This Saturday, June 28, will be marked by intense heat, with the entire continent on alert due to the hot weather, although showers and thunderstorms are also expected in central and southern regions of the country, according to the forecast from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The IPMA forecasts “hot weather with skies partially cloudy or clear, with periods of more cloudiness on the coastline of the northern and central regions, especially until mid-morning, and inland during the afternoon.”

There is also a “possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the interior of the central and southern regions during the afternoon.”

The wind will generally be weak from the north, turning east until mid-morning, and occasionally moderate (up to 30 km/h) along the western coastal strip.

Temperatures are expected to rise, particularly the maximums, ranging from 43 degrees in Beja to 25 degrees in Aveiro. Minimum temperatures will vary between 25 degrees in Portalegre and 16 degrees in Leiria.

Thirteen Districts ‘Orange’ until Monday

Thirteen districts will remain under an orange alert until Monday due to the forecast of hot weather.

Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Beja, and Portalegre were placed under an orange alert due to “persistent very high maximum temperature values” from midnight today until 11 PM on Monday, a statement from IPMA revealed.

Due to the heat forecast, IPMA also placed Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Santarém, Lisbon, Castelo Branco, and Coimbra under an orange alert from midnight Sunday until 11 PM Monday. These eight districts remain under a yellow alert until midnight Sunday.

Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, and Braga will also be under a yellow alert between 9 AM today and 11 PM Monday.

Tempo quente deixa 13 distritos sob aviso laranja até segunda-feira

Thirteen districts in mainland Portugal will be under an orange alert until Monday due to the forecast of hot weather, announced this morning by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The orange alert, the second most severe on a three-level scale, is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation,” with yellow, the least severe, indicating risk for certain activities dependent on meteorological conditions.

Furthermore, all regions of mainland Portugal face a very high risk of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure today.

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) stated on Friday that it would enhance the level of readiness to combat rural fires this weekend due to the forecast of extreme heat in mainland Portugal.

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) warned that extreme heat poses health risks, advising people to drink water, avoid alcohol, and seek cool or air-conditioned environments.

In a set of recommendations published online, the DGS highlights IPMA’s warnings of rising temperatures, with maximums potentially exceeding 40 degrees in some regions, urging citizens to exercise caution.
