The regional authority has announced that the forest road connecting Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro, overlooking the mountains above Funchal, will also be closed.
In a statement, the IFCN urges both residents and visitors to “strictly follow the instructions of Civil Protection authorities and avoid any risky behavior.”
The mountain trails in Madeira are frequented daily by hundreds of people, mostly tourists.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange warning for rain on the southern coast of Madeira and mountainous areas from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday, later transitioning to a yellow warning.
Meanwhile, the Funchal Port Authority has issued a bad weather warning, forecasting wind gusts ranging from 51 to 62 kilometers per hour from any direction. The strong sea agitation warning has been extended until 6 a.m. on Tuesday (initially set until 6 p.m. today), indicating that waves may reach 4.5 meters on the north coast of Madeira and 2.5 meters on the south coast.
Given the weather forecasts, the Regional Civil Protection Service advises the public to adopt “appropriate behavior,” especially in historically vulnerable areas and more exposed regions, avoiding movement and presence near wooded and coastal areas.
The yellow warning, the least severe on a three-level scale, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions, while the orange warning, the second most severe, is issued for moderate to high-risk weather situations.
