The Hindu community, represented by its president Manuel Mulji, expressed “satisfaction and hope” upon receiving news of the new Pope’s appointment. The community acknowledged his extensive missionary experience of over 30 years in Peru, highlighting his close work with disadvantaged communities, and his unwavering commitment to social justice and strengthening local communities.

“We recognize and value how His Holiness embodies a spirit of closeness, humility, and service,” the statement said, emphasizing his efforts with indigenous communities in Peru, where he promoted intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, and worked to enhance the global pastoral decision-making role of local churches.

“These are universal values we share in Sanatan Dharma, the enduring philosophy of Hinduism, which we believe are essential for a more just and harmonious world.”

The Hindu community of Portugal extended wishes for a “enlightened and inspiring” papacy, hoping it will yield “fruits for all humanity.” In his initial public statements, Pope Leo XIV expressed a desire for “a Church that is a home for everyone,” committed to tirelessly working for peace and justice.

“This vision deeply resonates with our principles and inspires us to continue building bridges between communities.”

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was elected Pope today after a two-day conclave in Vatican City, taking the name Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, USA, the new Pope has Spanish ancestry and Peruvian nationality and is associated with the Order of Saint Augustine.

Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
