The Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores (SRPCBA) recorded a total of 34 incidents between Wednesday and today on five islands of the archipelago due to the passage of the Hipólito depression, with no casualties reported.
According to a statement from the SRPCBA, between Wednesday and 07:54 local time (08:54 in Lisbon) today, 34 incidents were recorded on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, Pico, Graciosa and São Jorge.
Following the passage of the Hippolytus depression through the archipelago, the SRPCBA has recorded two incidents since 00:00 local time today, specifically “a house flooded in São Miguel and a structure collapsed in Terceira”.
“During yesterday [Wednesday], a total of 32 incidents were recorded on five islands: 10 on Pico, nine on São Miguel, seven on Graciosa, five on São Jorge and one on Terceira,” he added.
According to the SRPCBA, the situations reported on Wednesday “were related to flooding of roads, flooding of homes, overflowing streams and falling trees” and “no casualties were reported”.
Considering the warning issued by the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the SRPCBA advises the population to continue adopting self-protection measures.
Due to the Hippolytus depression, the IPMA issued an orange warning on Wednesday for the islands of the Central (Terceira, São Jorge, Faial, Pico and Graciosa) and Eastern (São Miguel and Santa Maria) groups, which are today under a yellow warning for sea turbulence, sometimes heavy rain and wind.
For the same reasons, the yellow warning also covers the islands of the Western group (Flores and Corvo).
The orange warning is the second most serious on the scale and is issued for “moderate to high risk weather conditions”.
The yellow warning is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
