Hispano-Luso Poetry Meeting honors Celeste Caeiro, the carnation woman

The event “Rios Revueltos – Segundo Encontro Hispanoluso de Poesia, Literatura, Pintura e Música” will take place “In memoriam Celeste Caeiro,” as announced today by the municipalities of the Seville region and the artistic collective Desde las Márgenes.

Organizers emphasize the importance of “honoring Celeste Caeiro,” the woman who became synonymous with the Portuguese Revolution through the “simple gesture” of distributing carnations to the soldiers who overthrew the dictatorship on April 25, 1974, becoming “an icon of freedom and resistance.”

Celeste Caeiro, widely known as Celeste dos Cravos, passed away on November 15 at the age of 91. Her gesture gained international acclaim, highlighted by media such as The New York Times, The Economist, and El País. She was honored with the Order of Liberty by the President of the Republic and the Medal of Honor of the City of Lisbon, celebrated over the years by civil society initiatives from schools to cultural organizations.

The Second Hispanic-Luso Meeting of Poetry, Literature, Painting, and Music will be held from March 28 to 30, gathering poets, visual artists, and musicians from Portugal and Spain in a space for artistic exchange and interaction, aiming to “strengthen the bond” between the two countries.

This second edition will expand the program to include poetry recitals, literary presentations, exhibitions, and concerts in various venues of the two neighboring Andalusian localities, with the Guadalquivir River serving as “a unifying and inspirational element,” according to the joint statement released today.

Participating writers include Alba Madero Milla, Emílio Ballesteros, Fernando Cabrita, Manuel Moya, Pedro Jubilot, Pepe Palma, Raquel Zaragoza, and Sofia Correia. The concerts will feature musicians such as guitarist Octávio Silva, singer Rosario Solano, and the flamenco group Peña Cultural Mazaco.

On the final day, the program includes a recital of “Hispanoluso poets,” sessions dedicated to Fernando Pessoa, and the Poesias do Mundo festival from Loulé, concluding the event.

Activities are open to the public, “to encourage citizen participation and engagement with art and culture in its many forms.”

The organization of the Encontro Hispanoluso seeks to establish “a stream of art and culture, linking the waters of the Guadalquivir and Guadiana into a borderless flow,” celebrating the shared artistic richness between Spain and Portugal.

The Encontro Hispanoluso de Poesia, Literatura, Pintura e Música is organized by the municipalities of La Puebla del Río and Coria del Río, along with the Andalusian collective Desde las Márgenes.
