The ISS has urgently and immediately closed an illegal care home in Charneca da Caparica, Setúbal, where 43 elderly individuals, aged between 73 and 103, were residing, according to a statement from the institute.
The closure followed an inspection to check if the facility continued to operate after it was ordered to shut down.
According to the statement, an inspection conducted prior to the closure revealed poor hygiene conditions at the location, and a closure notice was posted in mid-October, officially announcing the facility’s shutdown.
The statement noted, “The hygienic, sanitary, health, and safety conditions in which the elderly were accommodated posed an imminent danger to their physical integrity, health, comfort, and well-being, justifying the immediate and forced closure.”
The owner received a fine of 35,000 euros, in addition to the closure order, following the initial inspection.
After 30 days, the legal timeframe given to the owner to shut down the facility, relocate the elderly, and inform families of the closure in a timely manner, the ISS found the care home still in operation.
The elderly residents have been relocated: 12 were placed in facilities with cooperation agreements with social security, and 31 stayed with relatives, according to their choices.
